KATJAKOVANEN

The studio

Eleven years in the same north-facing room

Katja Kovanen paints portraits and abstract work from a studio in Quesnel, British Columbia, and teaches in groups small enough to work over your shoulder.

The studio faces north, which is the only reason any of the portraits look consistent. North light does not move; a south-facing window would give one beautiful hour and then a different painting every twenty minutes after that.

The work divides roughly in three. Portraits, which are slow and need a sitter willing to come back. Abstract pieces, which are fast and need seven failures underneath before the eighth one holds. And jewellery, which began as a way to use up brass offcuts and turned into its own line.

Everything is made here, in small numbers, and sold from here. Nothing is licensed out and nothing is reproduced at scale — which is why editions are small and some pieces exist only once.

Visiting and learning

The studio runs workshops through the year, in person in Quesnel and online for everyone else. Groups are capped in single figures for the in-person days, because that is the number where it is still possible to reach every easel.
